LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT Students who choose Italian to fulfill the language
requirement must complete ITA 2220 or the equivalent. All students graduating
from the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill this requirement; selected
majors in other colleges may also have a language requirement. Students
who enter the university with no previous Italian fulfill the requirement
by completing ITA 1120-1121 (or ITA 1110-1111) and 2220. Each course carries
4 credit hours for a total of 12 hours for the entire sequence. EXEMPTION AND PLACEMENT A student who has taken any college Italian at
another institution must continue the sequence at Florida State University
at the nearest equivalent level through ITA 2220 to fulfill the language
requirement. A student who has taken Italian in high school and has never
enrolled in any college Italian class may exempt the first levels of college
Italian through departmental placement. DEPARTMENTAL PLACEMENT After one year or
less of Italian in high school the student is advised to enter
ITA 1120 or 1110. After two years of study, the student is advised
to enter ITA 1121 or 1111. After completing three years, the students
may enter ITA 2220, and after three years, the student may enter ITA
2240 or a course on the 3000 level. If the student received a
grade of C or below in the last high school course, or if the last course
was two or more years ago, the student is advised to begin the sequence
one level lower.

Credit extended in meeting the foreign language requirement for graduation may not be used in satisfying the minor. THE ITALIAN MAJOR REQUIREMENTS Thirty (30) semester hours numbered above 2220
are required including ITA 2240, 3420, ITA 3421, at least one 3000-level
literature course in Italian (ITW 3100, ITW 3101) and a minimum of twelve
semester hours at the 4000-level. A maximum of six semester hours
from among the following course work may count toward he thirty semester
hour requirement: ITT 3430, ITT 3500, ITT 3501, ITT 3520.
ITW 3391r also may be counted toward the major and minor in Italian.
A minor is required. Honors in the Major
Students are encouraged to graduate with honors where possible. Requirements include a 3.2 grade point average for entrance into the program, completion of six hours of honors research, and the writing of an honors thesis. Co-Major in Another Foreign Language Twenty-one (21) semester hours in Italian courses numbered above 1999, selected in consultation with the Italian advisor, plus twenty-one (21) semester hours above the 1999 level in one of the following divisions: Chinese, French, German, Linguistics, Russian or Spanish. The student should consult with the advisor of the second language to select appropriate courses. One second year course must be used to satisfy the College or University language requirement. A co-major in Italian will not require a minor. Major in Italian with Business Concentration A major in Italian with a concentration in Business may be selected. The program consists of twenty-one (21) semester hours beyond the A & S language requirement, plus twenty-seven (27) hours of designated courses in the College of Business. The student should consult with an advisor to select courses. No minor is required.

Concentration
in Teacher Certification For teacher certification in the state of Florida,
students are NOT required to complete any education courses, just your
major in Italian plus a minor (if required) through the College of Arts
and Sciences. You can then qualify for a Temporary Florida Educator's
Certificate. While teaching, you can learn the professional education
competencies to qualify for a Professional Florida Educator's Certificate.
