GUIDELINES FOR COURSE APPROVAL: WHICH COURSES TAUGHT IN ENGLISH WILL SATISFY MY MAJOR?

At the 3000 level and above, some French courses are taught in French while others are taught in English. Depending on the language in which students write their assignments, courses taught in English may count towards Major or Minor programs as follows:

Undergraduate Major in French

French courses taught in English with written work done in English may not count towards the Major. Any number of 3000 and 4000 level French courses taught in English with the written work done in French may count towards the Major.

French Majors are encouraged to take selected courses offered by the French program that do not count toward the major, to satisfy university requirements such as the Liberal Studies in Humanities, Gordon rule and multicultural requirements. Courses to consider include French Cinema , Literature and Sexuality, and French Women Writers which satisfy many required university credits (Multicultural ‘y’, Gordon Rule, and Liberal Studies/Humanities area).

Undergraduate Major in French with a Concentration in Business

Students in the French with a concentration in Business major may take one single course taught in English with written work done in English to satisfy the requirements of the major.

Undergraduate Co-Major in French and in a Modern Language

Students in the French co-major may take one single course taught in English with written work done in English to satisfy the requirements of the French part of the co-major.

Undergraduate Major in French and Francophone Studies  (temporarily suspended)

Students in the French and Francophone Studies major may take one single course taught in English with written work done in English to satisfy the requirements of the interdisciplinary major.

Undergraduate Major other than French - Consult your program’s undergraduate advisor.

Undergraduate Minor in French

A maximum of one French course taught in English with the written work done in English may count towards the Minor. Any number of French courses taught in English with the written work done in French may count towards the Minor.

Before enrolling on French courses taught in English, students should check the course description to ensure that they can present their written work in the language of their choice and that this language meets the requirements of their Major or Minor program. Students should also obtain in advance the agreement of the course instructor concerning the language in which they will submit their work. Those who have not yet completed FRE 2220 (and preferably also FRE 3420) should be aware that they are likely to find it very challenging to do the written work in French for 3000-level courses in Literature, Culture and Civilization; they should also be aware that weak French could adversely affect their grade. This matter should be thoroughly discussed with the course instructor before the end of the drop-add period. In the case of Comparative courses taught in English bearing FOW course numbers, students wishing to take such a course for major or minor credit in French must enroll under a FRE tutorial number rather than under the FOW course number; the course iundergraduate adviser will provide further information.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
(Top of Page)

The completion of FRE 2211 or the equivalent is required for students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, with a major in other areas of the College of Arts and Sciences, and with selected majors in other colleges. Students with no prior experience in French can fulfill this requirement by taking FRE 1120, FRE 1121 (4 hrs each) and FRE 2211 (4hrs).

Exemption and Placement

A student who has received credit for any college-level French course at another institution must continue the sequence at FSU at the nearest equivalent level and complete FRE 2211 to fulfill the language requirement. A student who has taken French in high school and has never enrolled in any college-level French course may exempt the first levels of college French through the CLEP or a placement exam.

Native Speakers

Native speakers of French may be exempt from the language requirement. The Division recommends that native speakers register for a 3000-level of higher course (such as FRE 3420 or FRW 3100). For further information, see the French Undergraduate Advisor or the faculty member offering the course. Please be aware that some courses are closed to native speakers.

Placement Examinations

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) - Students may determine placement based on the results of the CLEP exam in French. Students who have not yet received any college credit in French may register for this exam through the office of Evaluation Services, Rm 1200, University Center, Bldg C, (850) 644-3017.  Up to twelve hours credit in French may be earned. The exam is administered daily throughout the calendar year but pre-registration is required.  The cost is currently $75. Students may not be enrolled in any French course during the semester in which the CLEP exam is taken. Unofficial results are received the same day; official results within 2-3 weeks.

MANDATORY PLACEMENT EXAM in French - FSU requires all students that entered the university after January 1, 2003 and who are taking their first French course in Spring 2004 or later to take a mandatory placement exam before the first day of  classes (unless the student has NO prior experience with the language or has earned IB or AP test credit in French).  Placement only - no college credit may be earned through this exam. Results are received immediately. Contact Mary LePoer (644-2606) for further information.
