          This course is offered to students who will use Chinese in business and professional settings. It aims to develop students' Chinese proficiency in the context of business activities that require not only adequate language skills but also adequate awareness of socio-cultural customs and concepts in Chinese speaking areas. Upon completing this course, students will have obtained these abilities: 1) to hold conversations on selected business topics with correct business vocabulary and in culturally appropriate manners, 2) to read business-related materials from authentic publications with the help of dictionaries, 3) to write simple and yet effective business correspondence in proper styles, 4) to have basic knowledge of China's socio-cultural values, trade policy, and political situations, which often inform Chinese ways of doing business; and 5) to use common Chinese computer applications for daily business purposes.

          To register for this course, students should have had two years of college level Chinese courses, or equivalent language proficiency recognized by the instructor.

  • (Tentative) Business Chinese 30 Lessons. Beijing: Beijing Languages Institute, 1995.
  • Materials from Chinese magazines, newspapers, and electronic publications on the Internet.
  • Recordings of relevant programs on CCTV-4 (Chinese Central Television).
