COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I
This course is for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese. It aims to help students to obtain an adequate grasp of basic language skills in both spoken and written Chinese and to lay a good foundation for further study of this language or fulfilling the language requirement at FSU.

  • Prerequisites: none.

  • Credit hours: 4, the first component of the three basic course sequence (CHI 1120, 1121, 2220), which fulfills the FSU language requirement.

CHI 1121 Elementary Chinese II
As a follow-up course to CHI 1120, this course expands students’ familiarity with listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese.

  • Prerequisites: CHI 1120 or permission of instructor.

  • Credit hours: 4, the second component of the three basic course sequence (CHI 1120, 1121, 2220), which fulfills the FSU language requirement.

CHI 2220 Intermediate Chinese
This course continues to develop the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese by introducing more grammar, vocabulary, and sentence patterns on the intermediate level.

  • Prerequisites: CHI 1121 or permission of instructor.

  • Credit hours: 4, the last component of the three basic course sequence (CHI 1120, 1121, 2220), which fulfills the FSU language requirement, and counts as the first course towards Chinese minor.

CHI 3240 Reading & Conversation
This course helps students to consolidate their knowledge of Chinese grammar and vocabulary that they have learned previously, in particular further developing their communicative proficiency in speaking and reading Chinese. It serves the best purpose if taken concurrently with CHI 3420.

  • Prerequisites: CHI 2220 or permission of instructor.

  • Credit hours: 3, counts towards Chinese major/minor.

CHI 3420 Chinese Grammar & Composition
Offered as a follow-up course to CHI 2220, this course focuses on reading and writing at the high intermediate level, and also helps to develop proficiency in listening and speaking and a good awareness of contemporary Chinese culture. Students who take this course are encouraged to take CHI 3240 concurrently.

  • Prerequisites: CHI 2220 or permission of instructor.

  • Credit hours: 3, counts towards Chinese major/minor.

CHI 3440 Business Chinese I
This course is
for students interested in obtaining Chinese language skills and cultural awareness from a business perspective.  It develops the abilities necessary to read business-related texts in Chinese, make business presentations as well as conduct business negotiations.  It also acquaints students with an extensive knowledge of Chinese business culture and business practices.

  • Prerequisites: CHI 2220 or permission of instructor.

  • Credit hours: 3, counts towards Chinese major/minor.

CHI 4410 Advanced Chinese  I
Designed to enhance the comprehensive language skills of students who have taken Chinese language courses for three years or have acquired equivalent language ability, this course develops advanced skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by helping students to grasp complex grammar and increase vocabulary extensively. It also enables them to use the target language to discuss an array of topics concerning economy, culture, society and politics of contemporary China in global contexts.

  • Prerequisites: two CHI 3xxx courses or permission of instructor.

  • Credit hours: 3, counts towards Chinese major/minor.

CHT 3391 Chinese Film
This course enables students to study Chinese cinema both as a unique genre of modern arts and as a powerful sociopolitical discourse by presenting representative films from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Upon completing the course, students will have attained 1) an overall view of the development of film in China, 2) the necessary skills for interpreting the cinematic language, 3) some basic knowledge of Chinese literary and aesthetic conventions, and 4) an appropriate understanding of the social issues and cultural customs illuminated on the Chinese screen. Taught in English.

  • Prerequisites: none.

  • Credit hours: 3, counts towards Chinese major/minor, multicultural requirement, and liberal studies requirement.

CHT 3930 Modern Chinese Literature in Translation
This course focuses on Chinese literature at the modern time spanning from the early twentieth century to the present. Students will read English translations of representative works by major writers during this period not only from mainland China but also from Taiwan and the Chinese diaspora. Readings will cover primary literary genres—the novel, poetry, essay, and drama. In addition to learning analytical and critical skills whereby to interpret and appreciate modern Chinese literary texts, students will also be able to obtain knowledge of the historical and sociopolitical changes of modern China that informed the production of these works.

  • Prerequisites: none.

  • Credit hours: 3, counts towards Chinese major/minor, and multicultural requirement.
