MEMBER PROFILES:

Rosario Michelle Ramírez Matabuena (rramirez@fsu.edu) began studying Spanish literature and culture at Rollins College and she worked towards her MA in Spanish in Madrid through New York University. As a doctoral student, she focuses on ecrocriticism in contemporary cultural studies. She has lived in México, Spain and France. She has also studied at the Universidad de Oviedo (2004) in Asturias, Spain and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2006). Rosario is now studying Portuguese which she hopes to implement in her Peninsular studies. 

Jaclyn Plona (jplona@fsu.edu) is interested in identity definition in contemporary works written by Afro-Caribbean writers. She has been studying Spanish for twelve years, but was determined fluent by the OPI before ever leaving the country… an inspirational point for her students who struggle with do not have time or money to travel outside the country. She has studied in Cuernavaca, Mexico and has volunteered in various parts of Costa Rica. Recently, Jaclyn won the Winthrop King Scholarship in Spanish to study in Puerto Rico during the summer of 2009.

Christine Weissglass (caw07f@fsu.edu) is from Charleston, SC. She is a second-year graduate student focusing in Hispanic linguistics and is interested in Second Language Acquisition, Phonology and Psycholinguistics. She received her BA from the College of Charleston where she majored in Spanish. She has spent time in Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica and most recently Spain.

Allison Strickland (aws07c@fsu.edu) first became interested in Spanish while serving a mission in Southern California for her church from 2000 to 2002. After returning home to Georgia, she worked as a teaching assistant and exploratory Spanish instructor in an elementary school. During this experience, she fell in love with teaching and decided to get a degree in Spanish education. Allison has studied abroad in México twice (summer 2005, summer 2006). While in México, she studied Mexican history, advanced Spanish grammar and received her ESOL endorsement.

Sarah Tilley (sat05e@fsu.edu) began studying Spanish in high school. After her second year of Spanish, she went on a mission trip to México. Her interest has since then expanded to include linguistics and foreign language education. As an undergraduate, she spent a summer in Spain where she studied in Valencia and volunteered in a Pilgrim House on the Camino de Santiago. Her most recent experience abroad was a volunteer trip to Nicaragua. Her other academic interests fall under her International Affairs degree where she focuses on Economics.

Jaime Antonio Rivera is a doctoral student from Xalapa, Veracruz, México. He is focusing on Classroom Second Language Acquisition. Jaime began his graduate work in Spanish in 2003. He has participated in a student organization called Teatro Latino where he found an outlet for his creativity. He has participated as an actor, director and has even written a play entitled "Adiós mundo cruel," which was warmly welcomed when performed. Jaime has been nominated for the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and has been Course Coordinator of an elementary Spanish course.

Zachary Kirkpatrick (zlk07@fsu.edu) is from Panama City, Florida. He majors in Philosophy and Spanish literature. His approach to literary study is heavily influenced by philosophical questions of truth and power. Zach intends to learn French, Spanish, and German and to focus on the fields of 19th-20th century European philosophy, phenomenology, (post)structuralism, as well as the more cross-disciplinary fields of feminist theory/criticism, and queer theory.  His personal goal for this year is to develop a proficiency in Catalan and visit or live in Catalunya in the near future. 

Nagore Barbero-Lora (nb08e@fsu.edu) is from Bilbao, Spain where she obtained her BA in English philology (Universidad de Deusto). She is a second-year graduate student presently focusing on Hispanic linguistics. She enjoys languages in general and more specifically the area of linguistics. She is interested in exploring how the Spanish language works, how it is structured and how it varies among speakers. Nagore spent a year studying in Ireland under the Erasmus Exchange program. She is now pursuing an MA in Linguistics at FSU which she aims to complete in 2010.

Naida Saavedra (nes02@fsu.edu) is a doctoral student from Maracaibo, Venezuela. She is focusing in Contemporary Latin American Literature and Latino Studies. She studied Communications in college and entered the Advertising track. She has always enjoyed her writing classes. When Naida came to the US to learn English and pursue an MA at FSU, she had the opportunity to fulfill a minor in Spanish and loved it. She was the recipient of the 2007-2008 Dorothy Hoffman Award for being an outstanding graduate student in Spanish.

Andrew DeMil (ajd06f@fsu.edu) is a doctoral student from Orlando, Florida. He is focusing in Second Language Acquisition. He received his MA in Spanish/Latin American Literature and Linguistics at the University of Central Florida. He has been studying Spanish for 12 years and has traveled to Spain, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. He enjoys Capoeira, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Martial Arts.

Rebecca del Toro (rd06d@fsu.edu) is from Miami, FL. She is a senior at FSU majoring in Spanish and Anthropology. She is interested in women writers and the transatlantic cultural impact of the Spanish Civil War on Latin America. She studied the culture of an indigenous community in Ecuador for 6 weeks. She is a recipient of the Mas Canosa Scholarship. Her favorite authors include Pablo Neruda, Federico García Lorca, and Carolina Coronado.

Jessica Craft is an undergraduate student from Miramar, Florida double majoring in International Affairs and Spanish. This is her third year at Florida State and after graduation she is hoping to either pursue a career in translation or teach Spanish. She is interested in Hispanic literature, the etymology of the language and the cultural and religious influences Christianity, Islam and Judaism have left on the Iberian peninsula. She hopes to walk el Camino de Santiago in the summer of 2010.

Robert Cameron (rcameron@fsu.edu) is pursuing doctoral studies in Spanish /Second Language Acquisition. Originally from Northern New Jersey, Robert became interested in language learning and teaching during the three years that he taught English as a Foreign Language in Turrialba, Costa Rica. He has since earned a master’s in Multilingual /Multicultural Education from Florida State University, and currently serves as the Assistant Director of the University’s Spanish Basic Language Program.

Margo Zwerling (mlz08@fsu.edu) is from Miami, Fl. She is a sophomore at FSU majoring in Exercise Science, minoring in Spanish, Chemistry and Biology. She has taken Spanish since first grade where she was in the International Program. She has been on many trips to Spain including a study abroad trip to Valencia. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and National Society of Collegiate Scholars Honor Societies and American Medical Women’s Association. She is also a member of the FSU Track Team. She strives to attend Medical School, become a doctor, and use her Spanish fluency with patients.
