Orientation, Noles Style!
Fredrika J. Flakes and Angela Luster
Often when we think of a Departmental orientation, the word "boring" comes to mind. Angela Luster, a new student from Orlando, Florida was no different. "I was expecting an unstructured gathering of a few students and professors, but I was pleasantly surprised," says Angela.
Angela, along with 20 other new and established students learned about our department, our faculty, and student organizations in which they could participate. There were representatives from the Career Center, as well as many faculty members who rushed over to greet our students after their faculty retreat. Dr. Marcy Driscoll's description of the Department and the services available to students revealed new insights to students, both new and old. SAC board members welcomed our students by working feverishly behind the scenes to make sure things went smoothly, by introducing themselves and the services they offered, and by participating on program. There were lots of door prizes like FSU sweatshirts, t-shirts, free food coupons, and school supplies. Afterwards, we still had so much food that most of the students packed doggy bags to take home!
The goal of the orientation was to inform and to entertain, but primarily to welcome our new students. Angela summarizes the orientation best when she says, "After orientation, I felt like I was part of the Department, and [ that ] I had made some new friends."
Angela et al, you have! Welcome to your Department!
