Summer Internship Experience

Beth Cortazzo

This past summer Beth Cortazzo worked as an Instructional Designer at Strategic Management Group (SMG) in State College, PA. SMG, an E-learning/Performance Improvement company, is headquartered in Philladelphia, PA. While working SMG's technology center, Beth performed several instructional designer tasks including:

  1. Technical Writing/Documentation - During the rapid development of several web delivered simulations, Beth was responsible for writing and controlling the technical content and design documentation.
  2. Evaluation - She was active in evaluating the simulations for continuity and documenting any errors for revision.
  3. Mock Ups - She created screen mock-ups (using Macromedia Dreamweaver) of several web-based performance improvement tools. The mock-ups were delivered to the web developers/software engineers to complete various client customizations of the product.
  4. Writing - She wrote some introductory text and supplementary text that was included in the web-based simulations.
  5. Beth also had the opportunity to create a needs assessment questionnaire for new client engagement activities and usability guidelines for company web development although these tools were not actually used while she was there.

The summer at SMG allowed Beth to acquire technical writing skills while enhancing her technical knowledge by working with web developers, software engineers, and quality assurance. Working with e-learning also improved her technical knowlege. She also gained first-hand experience at rapid prototyping/development and methods of project management. Overall, Beth's experience at SMG was very rewarding.
