Degree Requirements
Master's students are required to complete a minimum of 36 hours of prescribed and elective courses, including an internship, and to pass a comprehensive written examination. Those students wishing to continue into the doctoral program also take an oral examination. The entire program can usually be completed in three semesters and a summer. A specialist degree is also offered in this program. Instructional Systems Masters graduates take an additional 30 hours of advanced course work, complete an instructional systems project, and take a comprehensive examination. Masters degree holders with no background in instructional systems take 24 hours of core courses in instructional systems, then fulfill the other requirements described above. The doctoral program in Instructional Systems requires approximately two years of formal course work (but less time if a master's degree in Instructional Systems is obtained at Florida State). All doctoral students must complete the residency requirement (24 credit hours in any 12 month period) prior to taking the preliminary examination at the end of their course work. Doctoral students generally require a minimum of one additional year to complete and defend the dissertation. For more detailed information about our degree programs take a look at our Programs page.
