FSU LONDON STUDY CENTER
International Affairs
This program is designed
to add a study-abroad dimension to Florida State University’s
baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in International
Affairs. The program, based at the FSU London Study Center, includes
an excursion to Brussels. In addition to classroom meetings, the program
will utilize locations in London and Brussels to study European and
British politics, with a special emphasis on the European Union. The
trip to Brussels will include briefings at NATO Headquarters, the
European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Council of Ministers
of the European Union. Tentative London activities include visits
to the House of Commons, including meetings with a Member of Parliament;
various guest lectures; and visits to offices of multinational corporations
and international organizations. Since
the program is offered as an integrated module of materials, all
students must enroll in both Special Topics: The European Union
and in Comparative Government: Great Britain, or their graduate
equivalents.
HOUSING:
Students stay
in furnished apartments in the FSU London Study Center (or comparable

CROATIA:
DUBROVNIK
Summer Program
In this region, over thirty
years ago, Florida State University established an educational linkage
with Yugoslavia. The link grew into a nine-university consortium to
explore issues in Southeast Europe. It continues today, as the former
Yugoslavia and other Balkan nations find themselves in the direct
path of democratic and free-market movements. This study program is
an exceptional opportunity for participants-working within an international
scholarly enclave-to learn about, analyze, and discuss both the region's
cultural-historical background and its contemporary political issues
of transition and security.
Through its long-standing relationship with the Balkan region-including
collaboration with the 300-year-old University of Zagreb-FSU is able
to offer this timely program at the historic Inter-University Centre
(IUC). Founded in 1971 at the height of the Cold War, this distinguished
international institution is co-sponsored by some 200 member universities.
As an independent center for advanced studies, the IUC became a seminal
venue for exchange of ideas among scholars of the East and West. In
the twenty-first century, the IUC continues its dedication to independent
scholarship, while promoting communication in an increasingly pluralistic
region and world. A focus is specialized postgraduate education that
bears both on regional concerns and the challenges of globalism. Its
international agenda, notably in the social sciences and humanities,
is now informed by issues of post-communism, European integration,
and the stabilization of Southeast Europe.
The IUC's location is apt for its multinational purpose. Dubrovnik's
first-millennium roots and varied cultural heritage offer a fertile
ground for modern explorations of identity, government, and culture.
It is, moreover, a beautiful, cosmopolitan city that few Westerners
know firsthand.
COURSEWORK AND EXCURSIONS
Classes, taught by faculty from FSU and prominent regional European
universities, will meet for approximately half the day. Students will
enjoy use of the facilities of the Inter-University Centre. Program
excursions will include trips to coastal islands, where monasteries
have existed for as long as two millennia.
HOUSING
Program participants will look out over the azure Adriatic waters
from their popular vacation hotel. Breakfast is included.

VIETNAM: HO CHI
MINH CITY
Summer Program
A small country which has loomed large on the world's stage, Vietnam
is an ancient civilization of distinctive identity-both preserved
and transformed as many cultures have clashed over its soil. The Vietnam
study program is a singular educational opportunity at a singular
historical moment. No previous Vietnamese language study is required.
Distinct among Southeast Asian countries, twenty-first-century Vietnam
has preserved its ancient and colonial architecture and pristine coastline.
Today, so much of the exotic and beautiful remains, yet so much is
changing, new, and exciting as this friendly Asian society reinvents
itself and its economy. COURSEWORK
AND EXCURSIONS
Students will both live history and study it: witnesses of a transformation
in progress, scholars of a complex culture. FSU's affiliation with
Vietnam National University in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) ensures
exceptional courses in Vietnamese civilization and language. Another
highlight is the Ho Chi Minh Conservatory of Music's collaboration
in a study of Asian musical traditions.
Excursions near and distant will bring classroom
topics alive. Class schedules allow for field trips to the city's
cultural treasures (Independence Palace, the history and military
museums, Notre Dame Cathedral, Chinatown, and much more). Weekend
guided trips to the Mekong Delta, the Cu Chi tunnel complex, the
Cao Dai Temple at Tay Ninh, and other major sites open a panorama
of natural and human wonders: river and farm life, mountains, sculpture,
the mausoleums of monarchs.
HOUSING
Students will live in a full-service, five-star hotel in Saigon
(double occupancy) and will enjoy a full breakfast buffet daily.
The hotel offers excellent exercise facilities, including a pool,
as well as several restaurants.
