Cybelle McFadden Wilkens (Duke University)
Filmmaking, Gleaning, and Painting: Agnès Varda’s meditation on art

Agnès Varda's choice to include herself in _Les glaneurs et la glaneuse_ (2000) simultaneously influences the style and form of the film and adds another layer of meaning to it. The film is about gleaners of various sorts, but is also about filmmaking and the filmmaker's role in the creative process, as well as artistic creation in general. The images Varda gleans creates a kaleidoscope of French contemporary society, a vision of those who live in the margins. Her meditation on the role of the artist and artistic creation leads her from various forms of gleaning, to a consideration of artists who glean for art projects, to works of art depicting gleaners--all of which draw attention to the representational process of artistic creation. Such references to gleaning not only produce images within images of creative acts, but expose how her images are found and her role in that process.
