Susan Baldino

Interim Director, Program in Historical Administration and Public History

Susan Baldino received a B.S. in Anthropology with Honors from the The American University in Washington DC, a M.A. in History and Criticism of Art from Florida State University and is in the process of receiving a Ph.D. in Museum Studies from University of Leicester, Leicester UK, with a concentration in knowledge Management in Museums. She is now serving as interim director of the master's degree program in Historic Administration and Public History (HAPH), teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, and develops and supervises internships.

From 1993-2003 Ms. Baldino served as the Director of Appleton Programs and Museum Studies at Florida State University. She developed a dual directorship to create, implement and manage academic, professional and community programs for students, faculty and the community-at-large. She was also liaison to the Appleton Museum of Art for museum oversight, business plan, strategic planning, reorganization of the museum’s operating structure and evaluation and assessments of all aspects of museum operations and introduced collaborations among the museum, university and Ocala community. Ms. Baldino also developed the first university-museum professional training programs and served on the Florida Department of Education Committee that developed K-12 programming for the museum.

Ms. Baldino shaped the vision and founded Museum Studies at FSU, a unique interdisciplinary professional training program and the first such program in the state and region. She integrated 14 areas of study—from the arts and humanities to the sciences. In 2001 and 2002 she received grants from the FSU Research Foundation to implement the Museum Laboratory. The Museum Lab links the academic community with museums in the areas of research, conservation, education, Web technology and exhibition development. She has instituted innovations such as the following:

  • Florida-London video conferences, a partnership with the British Museum
  • Every Child and High School Internships, K-12 community education efforts
  • Tallahassee Museum Roundtable and Florida Museum Think Tank, professional forums
  • Florida Governor’s Mansion project, a web-based education resource center.

Ms. Baldino serves as a Cultural Program Leader and Instructor for the International Programs at Florida State University. In 2002 she created and developed the World Museum Class that travels to London and Spain as part of FSU’s International Programs. The class offers optional graduate course credit in the departments of History and Art History. The forthcoming World Museums: London, May 17-31, 2005, will be a journey through the past and future of museums and cultural institutions.

For 2004-05 Ms. Badino is serving as Chair of the Florida Association of Museums Foundation of the statewide professional museum foundation. She oversees the annual conference of the Florida Association of Museums and organize seminars and other professional development opportunities for museum workers, trustees and volunteers.
