Required Documents for the University Online Application


All of the following documents should be uploaded in the Supporting Documents page of the University Online Application in the .doc format. Don’t forget to SAVE each page of the application, even if the page is incomplete. We recommend that you print this page as a reference or checklist when completing the online application. DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION UNTIL ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS HAVE BEEN UPLOADED. Missing documents will delay the processing of your application.

All Master’s and Doctoral applicants must provide the following:
  • Statement of Purpose – Your statement (200-500 words) should describe your qualifications and long-term goals, as well as your desired major area of historical study at FSU (specify both time period and region). Please upload your statement as Document 1 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.

  • Publications, if appropriate. Please upload your publications as Document 2 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.

  • Honors – List scholarships, fellowships, academic honors. Please upload your honors as Document 3 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.

  • Writing Sample(s) – Submit a writing sample that represents your best work. It will be evaluated on its analytic power, creativity, and clarity of expression. Ideally it should be a research paper which demonstrates your facility with primary documents. Please upload your writing sample as Document 4 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.

  • Faculty - Please upload as Document 5 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.
    • Master’s – Have you been in contact with any member of the FSU History faculty about graduate study in our department? If so, which ones? If not, please visit http://www.fsu.edu/~history/facpages/faculty_pages.html and look over our faculty list.
    • Doctoral – List up to three faculty members with whom you would like to work. Please visit http://www.fsu.edu/~history/facpages/faculty_pages.html and look over our faculty list.


  • Foreign Language(s) – This includes courses taken in college, graduate reading knowledge exams, and native speaker. Please indicate the language, level, year, grade, and institution. Please upload as Document 6 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.
    • Master’s – All students will be required to have graduate reading knowledge of a foreign language to complete the MA degree. This may be completed while in the program.


  • List any related professional experience (museum volunteer, secondary school teacher, etc.) Also, indicate whether or not you wish to be considered for a departmental fellowship or assistantship. Please upload as Document 7 in the Supporting Documents page of your University Online Application.

  • Recommendation Letters - There is a section on the University Online Application for requesting the three (3) required letters of recommendation.
Special Considerations
  • Master’s - Applicants must have completed 18 semester hours of history course work. If accepted into the MA program, the student will be assigned a major professor.
  • Doctoral – Applicants without a 3.3 undergraduate GPA may be considered with a 3.65 cumulative Master’s GPA. A thesis-type masters is required for admission into the Ph.D. program.
