Public History Resources

As a thriving university city and state capital, Tallahassee has abundant historic resources. Students can take advantage of a myriad of hands-on opportunities for internships and volunteer experiences in public history venues. The diverse history and population of the city are reflected in historic sites and buildings, museums, parks, and archives. Many FSU graduates now work in these institutions.

Historic Resources: State of Florida

The Florida Office of Cultural and Historical Programs oversees the large complex that makes up the Museum of Florida History and the Bureaus of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Resource Management. Among the notable state historical and archaeological sites are the 17th-century Mission San Luis de Apalachee; the Old Capitol; the Knott House; and the Union Bank. Tallahassee is also the home of the State Archives as well as a number of state historical publications. In addition, the Tallahassee area boasts many state parks of historical significance such as Alfred B. Maclay Gardens, Edward Ball Wakulla Springs, Jackson Mounds and Natural Bridge Battlefield.

The growing city of Tallahassee is home to a number of private and public history and heritage organizations. One of the oldest history museums, the Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science includes an 1880s farm, various historic buildings and collections and a living collection of flora and fauna in a natural habitat. The John G. Riley House and Museum of African American History and Culture is a newly established museum and resource center whose time period covers the Reconstruction Era through Civil Rights with exhibits, workshops and oral history programs. Goodwood Museum & Gardens is a 1920s country estate that presents the typical lifestyle of landed gentry. The Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation encompasses preservation work from building surveys to National Register applications and educational outreach. Tall Timbers Research Station is an ecological research and conservation station that is also the site of the historic Beadel House and the Jones Family Tenant House.
