Welcome to the History Department
The History Department at Florida State University has a distinguished tradition of scholarly innovation and commitment to our students. One of founding departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, FSU’s chapter of the history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta, was chartered in 1926. Today we serve more than 500 undergraduate history majors and 150 graduate students.
As the Florida State College for Women, we awarded our first master’s degree in 1927, and since then we have produced more than 625 master’s degrees in history. After making the transition to FSU, the Department established a doctoral program, with the first Ph.D. granted in 1962. To date, we have hooded a total of 317 Ph.D.s, and currently average approximately 10 each year.
A Research I institution, our faculty not only maintain an impressive research record but they also have earned numerous teaching awards for their efforts in the classroom.
