GETTING OUT OF MOSCOW |
|
Okay, you have to spend a few days in Moscow and St. Petersburg if you go to Russia. You have to see the Kremlin, the Red Square, the Winter Palace, the Hermitage. Its absolutely mandatory. However, keep in mind, that you cannot say that you have seen the real Russia until you got out of Moscow or St. Petersburg into the province "глубинка". Here are just a few reasons for doing so:
1) "Real Russia". Life outside of the two cosmopolitan centers of Russia is very different. People are generally more laid back and their hospitality is legendary.
2) Low costs. It is much cheaper to travel and stay outside of Москва and Санкт Петербург. Did you know that according to Mercer Human Resource Consulting, an authority on cost of living, Moscow is the second most expensive city in the World? But if you go to smaller cities, especially those in eastern Russia you can find very decent hotel rooms for just $10 a night.(Talk about budget travel!) Food and transportation costs are also extremely low.
3) Cultural diversity. The population of Russia is very diverse. Occupying one sixth of the continental Earth, Russia has many different cultural groups and nationalities, including those of Mongolian, Tungusic, Turkish, German, Jewish, and Slavic decent. Many of these groups retain their cultural heritage and often their traditional lifestyles.
