Florida State University has reached an important milestone -- the sesquicentennial anniversary of our establishment. On January 24, 2001, we began a yearlong celebration of our proud and rich history.
In 1851, only 75 years after this country became an independent nation, and just six years after Florida achieved statehood, the Seminary West of the Suwannee River was established. The role of that forerunner of Florida State University was to educate young people who would help civilize the frontier of Florida. The original location of this institution -- the site where the Westcott fountain now stands -- is the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida. Thanks to our founder, Francis Eppes, grandson of Thomas Jefferson, we embraced the liberal arts approach that has prevailed throughout our history. This institution has been known by various names and has had a variety of missions over the past 150 years. Throughout the changes, Florida State University has been willing to accept the pioneering roles and adapt successfully to new times. We believe that this ability to adapt to frequent changes in our mission has given us a unique philosophy of higher education and unique potential as a national research university. As we look forward to the grand finale of our Sesquicentennial we will celebrate this philosophy and potential. At the same time, we will focus on the future contributions this university can make to the community, the state of Florida and the citizens of this great nation. We believe that our heritage and vision have positioned Florida State
University as a true "university for the new millennium." Please
join us for the many special events and observances that will mark our
Sesquicentennial Celebration. |
