FSU Memories 1990s and beyond

Thank you for visiting the FSU memories page.
My favorite FSU memories are of Reynolds Hall. I will never forget arriving the first day and finding out there was no air conditioning, no elevator and NO BOYS. I thought I would hate it, but there couldn't have been a better place to spend my freshman year. Being in that old building made me feel like I was part of the history of this great school. I could imagine the girls decades before me having many of the same experiences I was having that year. It made me sad when I went back for a visit last November to see that the building was completely modernized. I know it had to be done, but I will hold the memories of the "old" Reynolds Hall in my heart forever. The friendships and the memories I made there are irreplaceable.

It is really funny, looking back now. I had never even considered going to FSU, but for some reason or another I requested info from the admissions office (along with just about every other major University in the South). There was something that kind of clicked when I saw the brochure they sent. It was a feeling I cannot put into words. Something inside made me feel as though perhaps this was the place I was destined to spend my college days. Somehow I guess it looked like home. After my initial visit to the campus, I was pretty sure that FSU was where I wanted to go. Everyone I met was kind and helpful, from the students to the faculty and administrative staff. They all made me feel welcome. My first FSU football game was the 1987 Miami game. We lost the game, and it was a heartbreaker, but when I left that stadium I knew I was a Seminole. Of course I had already been accepted into FSU, but there was no longer any doubt as to my loyalties after I walked out of Doak that afternoon. It was now official. I was definitely a Seminole and I knew at that moment I'd be a Seminole until the day I died. To this day, whenever I hear the Chiefs hit the fight song or play the alma mater, I get goosebumps. From orientation through graduation, I never once regretted my decision to attend FSU. I even went on to marry a fellow FSU alum. I will never forget any of the 4 national championship games we had the honor of witnessing. I will never forget the thrill of beating Florida, especially at their place. I will never forget UNC and Duke coming to play basketball in Tallahassee the first year we were in the ACC. I will never forget introducing my 4 month old son to the guy who would become the 2000 Heisman trophy winner on the same day he had the honor of meeting the best coach in the history of football.

The whole experience was larger than life. Some of the best friends I have I made In Tallahassee. Being able to be a Seminole and participate in student life in the best place on earth was something I will always be grateful for

I can remember when my cousin and I went down to the Gators game in '98 when the Rooster had to start against Florida and the Gators came in highly ranked. It was a great game. Noles won. It got so rowdy we stomped the bleacher in front of us until the screws cam loose and the bleacher came apart! Go Noles!

I graduated in the winter of 93, the year of the National Championship. That was a great way to finish up school...I remember skipping class to wait in the baseball stadium for your section to be called. Mine was and it was off to another line to see if you could get tickets to the biggest game of the year, The National Title game at the Orange Bowl. I could, I won in the lottery system. My roommates and dear friends spent our last college moments together watching the Seminoles win their first national title. I truly miss those years I spent at FSU and cherish them dearly

I will never forget the telephone conversation I had with an admissions officer one late night. I was a senior in high school and called the officer back at 8pm, he was working late and answered my call. I was shocked to hear that FSU would probably not accept me for the fall semester, but that I would probably be allowed to attend the university if I came for summer. We talked for about half an hour and I accepted the summer term because I was going to do whatever it took to be a Seminole. I have never forgotten that and promised myself that night that I would do everything I could to thank FSU for letting me attend. To me, it wasn't a question of a university getting me it was about me getting FSU. I spent 4 years dedicating my time to FSU, the community, and my fellow Seminoles. Through opportunities that God and FSU has allowed, I've traveled to Jamaica and Tanzania, Africa for community service. I had the opportunity to serve as a host in the President's Skybox during football games, and was a guest when I was selected to be on the 2000 Homecoming Court. I served the Student Alumni Association as Vice President and the Seminole Leadership Experience as Chairman and Co-Chairman. FSU said thank-you to me when I selected to be in the Senior Wall of Fame in Spring 2001, but it is I that am still finding new ways to say thank you to FSU.

One of my favorite memories from my years at FSU is during my freshman year (1996) when we played Florida at home in football. We won the game and everybody rushed the field and picked grass to keep as souveniers. I still have the grass in my scrapbook. Then, some crazy fans tore down the goal post and walked out of the stadium with it down Chieftan Way and everybody was cheering and having fun. That was a fun day.

I would have to say my most memorable experience at FSU was being on the swim team. I will never forget the mornings at 6 am when it was freezing cold outside and the pool was warm from the heaters. It would be cold outside and still dark. There would be a fog hovering over the pool, and it was difficult to see the swimmers in the fog. I loved thinking about all the students still asleep in the dorms and apartments surrounding the school. There were times I wished I was still asleep in comforts of my bed. But looking back on it, I wouldn't have given up a single morning practice to sleep in every morning of my four years at FSU. Competing at FSU on a varsity team is the one thing I am still most proud of today, and I know I'll always hold that memory dear to me.

November 1996, my wife Rachel and our friends Dan and Jenn camped out with about 2000 other students behind Dick Howser Stadium from Friday night to Monday morning for UF/FSU football tickets. We stayed in a 6 man tent with our dogs in 35 degree weather, and partied all weekend long in anticipation of getting tickets to the most important game of the year. Which of course we won, ripped apart Doak Campbell Stadium, walked out with the uprights, and met UF again in the Suger Bowl.

I remember thinking Bobby Bowden was an untouchable, larger than life icon at FSU. While I was a student at FSU, I was walking in the Moore Athletic Center and noticed Bobby Bowden walking toward me. When he said "hello" I was thinking someone must have been behind me, but when I looked back there was no one. I was shocked, he was saying hello to me. I have since met him on a number of occassions, realizing that he is a down-to-earth, personable person despite being one of the top college football coaches in the United States. He is an approachable person and fantastic coach. Even when inundated with fans, he maintains his cool and tries to please all by signing autographs and shaking hands. He is unlike other coaches of celebrity status and I am glad he has chosen Florida State University to carry out his legacy.
