New dean of nursing

Florida State has a new dean of the School of Nursing.
Katherine Mason, who was director of Public Health Nursing in the Florida Department of Health, became dean this summer after Evelyn Singer, who had the job 17 years, stepped down.

Provost Larry Abele said Singer has improved the quality of the school's students, expanded its outreach and established the school's graduate programs.

He said Mason is "a leader in public health nursing with strong ties to Florida's nursing community.

"For three months in 1992, Kathy directed more than 1,000 nurses who traveled to Miami to provide health care to victims of Hurricane Andrew," he said. "That kind of dedication to public service, along with her passion for teaching and her research, more than qualifies her to lead the School of Nursing."

Mason has a bachelor's degree from Duke University, a master's from the University of North Carolina and a doctorate from the University of Florida.
