AUGUST 2001
NEW ALUMNI CENTER

The Florida State University president's house, which has been the official residence of eight FSU presidents, will be renovated to become an alumni center.

The groundbreaking was in late June, and the construction is expected to begin by the end of this year.

It's just the beginning.

"I think it's going fabulous," FSU alumni association president Jim Melton said in the spring, when he had quickly raised more than $3 million for the project. "You've got to go for the fast run. ... No one has told us 'no.'"

The beautiful 19th-century house at 1030 W. Tennessee St. will be named the Pearl Tyner Welcome Center for the 1930 graduate who donated the first $1 million toward the $7-million project.
It will be a first stop for alumni who visit campus.

"Our alumni will be able to receive an official welcome there, get directions and find out what's happening on campus," Melton said.
Once the house is renovated, it will have hospitality rooms on the first floor and alumni archives, open to the public, on the second floor.

In addition to the Tyner Welcome Center, a new, two-story center will be built on the west side of the house. Alumni Hall, as it will be known, will house the offices of the association and provide space for meetings and social functions.

A pavillion, to be built behind the Tyner Welcome Center and beside Alumni Hall, will also be available for alumni to use for social functions. There is room on the 15-acre site for construction of a residence for the university president.
