NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL TO OPEN AT FSU
COMPLETE STORY

House Speaker John Thrasher cheered the new Florida State University College of Medicine with a Seminole tomahawk chop and declared it a "great day for the state of Florida."
It was May 5, the frenzied last day of the two-month state legislative session, and the next-to-the-last bill passed gave Thrasher, the Republican from Orange Park, what he had been pushing for all along: a medical school for FSU.

VALUABLE ART MUSEUM BECOMES PART OF FSU

On 60 acres on Sarasota Bay is The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, with one of the most valuable collections in the nation, a circus museum and a 31-room Venetian-style mansion.
On July 1, it was all transferred to Florida State University.

Finally, parking relief is on the way to the FSU campus, but there's a price to be paid by students, faculty and staff.
A new transportation fee will be assessed to all students to pay for better parking and ultimately add about 3,000 spaces. Faculty and staff will see permit fees double over the next five years.

A NEW KIND OF CLASS WITH A VERY OLD TWIST

A new kind of class based on an old idea is coming to FSU. In the fall, Florida State is offering a Master Craftsman class designed to teach by doing as well as explaining, much like a craftsman and apprentice relationship.
The teacher, Bob Bischoff, is an internationally recognized artist and an FSU graduate. He is responsible for major art projects around campus such as the stained glass in Dodd Hall, a large granite seal in the University Center and the white stone benches in front of Westcott and around campus.

 
FSU's SESQUICENTENNIAL
COMPLETE STORY

Florida State University will spend the year of 2001 celebrating its 150th anniversary.
The sesquicentennial celebrates the school's creation date of 1851, when the Legislature authorized the Seminary West of the Suwanee. Some university officials have marked the anni-versary from 1857, the year the doors opened, but next year's sesquicentennial will count from the charter, as most schools do.

Students at Florida State University can now pay their university-related fees - tuition, overdue books, parking tickets, transcripts and health services - online. The new service from Student Financial Services is the latest in a series of Web-based services designed to streamline students' business dealings with the university.

University officials are appealing to students and alumni for patience while new buildings go up, old buildings are renovated and the campus becomes more beautiful.
"By far, this is the most successful year ever for Florida State University in terms of the number of construction projects being funded," said Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration John Carnaghi.
