OBITUARIES
Garth K. Blake
Garth K. Blake, 80, died April 6 in Mobile, Ala. He was a
Navy veteran of World War II. He became director of student teaching
in the College of Education at FSU in 1957. He worked at FSU
for 39 years and retired as associate dean of the College of
Education.
Dr. Blake was both a teacher and administrator, whose primary
appointment was in the College of Education, but who worked for
several divisions of the university.
Dr. Blake was regarded as one of the most knowledgeable of faculty
on institutional policy and procedure. He is remembered as a
warm and open educator.
Chris Kalfas
Chris Kalfas, 70, a lineman on Florida State's first two football
teams, one of the first Golden Chiefs and operator of his family
restaurant, the Silver Slipper, died June 9 of lung cancer.
Mr. Kalfas was known as "Daddy Chris" to family and
patrons in his 50 years running the steakhouse Tallahasseans
called "the Slipper."
He was a Shriner, a member of numerous civic organizations, a
golfer and a fisherman.
William Francis Tanner
Dr. William Francis Tanner, 83, a professor of geology, died
April 9 in Tallahassee.
Dr. Tanner received a B.A. in geology from Baylor University
in 1937, an M.A. from Texas Technical College in 1939 and a Ph.D.
in geology from the University of Oklahoma in 1953.
He came to Florida State University in 1954 and was a professor
in geology from 1974 until he retired in 1994, as a professor
emeritus. He had the reputation for being organized, fair, thorough,
thought-provoking and inspiring.
He was also a research scientist at the Florida Geological Survey.
