FSU ON CONSTRUCTION SPREE

University officials are appealing to students and alumni for patience while new buildings go up, old buildings are renovated and the campus becomes more beautiful.

"By far, this is the most successful year ever for Florida State University in terms of the number of construction projects being funded," said Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration John Carnaghi.

The university has at least 260 million in projects currently on the books (from the planning stage to completion).

They include:
A new basic sciences/medical school complex.
3,000 new parking spaces.
The realignment of Pensacola Street.
Demolition and rebuilding of the north end zone.
The $10-million Student Life Building, at the corner of Park Avenue and Wildwood Drive, the first of four buildings planned for the block. The 52,500-square-foot Student Life Building, scheduled to be finished by August, will contain University Housing, the Student Counseling Center, an auditorium /theater, office space for student organizations, computer labs, general purpose meeting rooms and a food court.
Renovation of the labyrinthine Williams Building, with its Escher-like floor design. The south and southeast sections of the building have been demolished, and the rest of the building has been gutted so that a new, modern interior can be built while the structure keeps its traditional exterior intact. The project should be complete by May 2001.
The burial of overhead electrical utilities along Copeland Street and installation of old-fashioned street lamps.
A new psychology building.
A new chemistry building.
