SCOTT TO HEAD STUDENT AFFAIRS

Winston Scott - an astronaut, an engineer, a U.S. Navy Captain and a Florida State grad - has agreed to become associate vice president for student affairs at FSU, with the expectation of becoming vice president for student affairs Jan. 1.
FSU Provost Lawrence G. Abele described Scott, 49, as "a natural leader."

Scott was scheduled to begin his job on campus Aug. 1. Jon Dalton, FSU's current vice president for student affairs, said last spring that he wanted to devote his time to directing the Center for the Study of Values in College Student Development in the College of Education.
Scott earned a bachelor of arts degree in music from FSU in 1972 and a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1980.

He has had a distinguished career from his first days in the Navy.
He has been on two space missions, including the Space Shuttle Columbia in December 1997, when he and another astronaut retrieved the out-of-control Spartan Satellite and placed it back on Columbia.

His first mission was in 1996 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor where he retrieved a Japanese satellite and walked in space more than six hours to test a suit in temperatures 125 degrees below zero.
He has logged a total of 24 days, 14 hours and 34 minutes in space.

SCOTT
"We are so fortunate that Capt. Scott has decided to return to FSU where his impact will be felt immediately as a leader and a role model," said Sandy D'Alemberte, president of FSU.
"I can't think of anything better to do than to go back to my alma mater," Scott said.
