AUGUST 99
ALUMNI RAISING MONEY TO CONVERT PRESIDENT'S HOUSE
By Jim Melton
President, FSU Alumni Association

Since 1948, the 14 acres of University property located north of Tennessee Street have been home to eight university presidents and their families. The actual residence was moved to the site, and over the years, the building and its landscaping have matured into an attractive setting.
In more recent years, this official residence has not been able to meet the growing list of demands asked of it.

Recently, favorable consideration was given to a request to allow the president to relocate his residence, thereby giving the university the opportunity to explore alternate uses of this property. A planning committee has recommended that a new house be constructed on the site to serve as a new private residence for the university president. The committee also recommended that the existing residence be used as an Alumni Center.

The FSU Alumni Association has accepted the challenge and initiated a campaign to raise private funds to renovate the residence and build a comprehensive Alumni Center.
The board of directors of the association voted to expend $500,000 of association assets to initiate planning and development of the facilities program. The price estimates run from $5 million to $9.5 million.
