Faculty/Staff

FSU Professor Emeritus Carl T. Devine, 87, died at his Tallahassee home on September 12. He was a professor of accounting at FSU from 1965 to 1976. He held a master's degree and a doctorate in business from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Devine was one of the leading scholars of his generation. Over his career he published numerous scholarly articles, essays, reviews, books and monographs, many of which are now referred to as classics. He is credited with stimulating interest in the field of behavioral research in accounting with his observation that "accountants seem to have waded through their relationships to the intricate psychological network of human activity with a heavy-handed crudity that is beyond belief."

Carl Devine was a genuine scholar who believed that being a bookworm was an honorable pursuit. His dedication to scholarship, and the integrity that he displayed in all aspects of his life, served as a model for other faculty and produced a lasting influence on many former students and colleagues.

Hank Mannheimer, a leading supporter of FSU sports, died September 2. Mannheimer was one of the earliest members of Seminole Boosters after the organization was founded in 1952. He led fund raising in the 1950s and 1960s, and was secretary of the Boosters board in 1967. Mannheimer and his wife, Bonnie, were fixtures at FSU sporting events.

A service station owner and car salesman, Mannheimer was perhaps best known for his attendance at the Boosters Monday luncheons.

"Hank was one of the leading proponents of Seminole Boosters," said Bob Lee Bannerman, who founded the organization. Mannheimer's son Douglas, was chairman of the Seminole Boosters in 1993. Two other sons are also graduates of FSU.
