Join 375 teachers, students, school administrators, and community partners who will take advantage of in-depth trainings, 23 workshops, networking opportunities, awards, and the mandatory grantee meeting for Florida Learn & Serve.

The Institute is offered at no cost; Florida Learn & Serve grantees have funds in their awards to cover costs to attend and bring colleagues and students. The Institute is the best opportunity in Florida this school year to learn more about how to use service learning to improve education and communities.

The Institute Program is now available! Click on the picture above to download the file (1.2 MB - PDF). The program contains all of the selected trainings and workshops, and gives the time, name, presenter, duration, and date for each session.

Click Here for Online Institute Registration

The deadline for Institute registration is November 11, 2009. We need information for everyone who will attend to provide name badges for participants. Teachers who are bringing chaperones and students can provide a list of who will attend, or the number of chaperones and students who will attend if individuals have not been identified.

Students at the Institute

Bring students (middle or high school). There will be student-focused and -presented sessions throughout the Institute. If the students you bring have amassed the required service hours, let us know and they can receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award on November 19 (see www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/ and contact Mary Matthews at mmatthews@admin.fsu.edu for details).

Displays

Bring student displays! Tables will be provided at the Institute for student displays—sign up to bring a display in your on-line registration.

Meeting and Lodging

The Institute will be held at The Peabody Orlando, located across the street from the Orlando Convention Center at 9801 International Drive, Orlando, 32819. A conference rate of $125 a night (for 1-4 people in a room) has been arranged, which will also include continental breakfast for participants. Make your reservations by calling the Peabody at 800-732-2639 or 407-345-4488. Be sure to say you are registering for the Florida Service-Learning Institute to secure the rate. The deadline for hotel registration is October 28. You must guarantee the reservation with a credit card.

Food

Continental breakfast will be provided. Other meals are on your own—Learn & Serve awardees can use award funds to cover meals.

Dress

For adults—business casual. For students—meeting school dress code.

Mandatory Attendance

Every Learn & Serve project must send a representative to the grantee meeting on November 20. While it is not mandatory that you attend all three days, it is strongly recommended that you attend at least two days to take advantage of the trainings, workshops, and networking opportunities that will be available. It is also recommended that new projects send at least one representative to the November 18 Service Learning 101 and New Projects Orientation trainings.

If you are only able/allowed to attend the November 20 grantee meeting, contact Joe Follman at 850-488-9661, or jfollman@admin.fsu.edu.
