Comprehensive Exam

The masters comprehensive exam consists of a substantial research paper, typically ranging in length from 30 to 60 pages, on a topic related to the student's chosen specialization area. This specialization area, while ideally reflected in the student's coursework, may be only peripherally related (if at all) if relevant coursework opportunities have not been offered. While the major professor and committee members may provide guidance in the selection and development of a topic of study, the role of faculty is relatively limited, reflective of the project's purpose as a means to develop and demonstrate the student's research skills and knowledge of a professionally suitable subject speciality.

Students must register for the Master's Comprehensive Examination (EDF 8967) at the beginning of the semester in which the portfolio will be completed and defended. Contact the departmental program secretary by phone at 850-644-6781 to obtain a reference number for EDF 8967.

If the student registers for the exam at the same time as he or she is completing masters classes, the course will count as zero credits (and so no additional charge will be added to the student's tuition). If, however, the student registers for the comprehensive exam without taking other classes at the same time (i.e. in the semester following completion of masters classes), the student will be charged for one credit. The paper must be submitted to the major professor in ample time for him or her to review it and assign a pass or fail grade. The student will not be permitted to graduate until a grade has been submitted for the comprehensive exam.

The comprehensive exam must showcase the student's mastery of relevant research methods learned in masters coursework. The quality and style of the paper should reflect the highest standards of academic research and writing and should follow the guidelines for the masters thesis in terms of structure and formatting.
