The student and major professor select and agree upon nominations for membership on the student's advisory committee. The student then personally approaches the faculty members so nominated to request that they serve on the committee.

The composition of the advisory committee must meet the following requirements:
1. The committee must have a minimum of four members.
2. The major professor and at least one other member must be in the department in which the student has chosen to earn their degree;
3. At least one member must be from another department in the College of Education or elsewhere in the university to represent the student's area of specialization.
