About Us

The SIDES program and its immediate predecessors at FSU have been training students in the foundations, professional skills, and policies of international and multicultural education and helping them to develop an informed and critical perspective on education’s role in socio-cultural change for over 30 years now. During that period, students and faculty have participated in a wide variety of research studies and field projects around the world and across the country. Alumni are found on all continents of the globe and in every region of the Americas.

Options for advanced study… and improved practice

We offer three graduate degrees: the Master’s (M.S.), the Education Specialist (Ed.S.), and the Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) – in the closely-related tracks of international and multicultural education. All three are awarded under the College’s Educational Leadership and Policy program with a concentration in SIDESMaster’s degrees may typically be completed in one to two years, whereas the PhD entails some seventy hours of coursework and dissertation research beyond the MS level and so may require two to four additional years of study. The EdS is intermediate between the two, involving coursework similar to the doctoral degree but without the completion of a dissertation.

In addition, the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Department is proud to collaborate with the Department of Middle and Secondary Education in FSU’s School of Teacher Education in offering the Peace Corps Master’s International in Education (PCMI). The PCMI is an MS degree for students interested in Peace Corps service overseas. It combines 4 terms of internationally-focused and teacher education coursework with two years of hands-on international education experience in a developing country teaching in local schools. Participants simultaneously work toward completion of a Master’s degree in the SIDES concentration or a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education, Science Education, or English Education, with accompanying Florida teacher certification.

Post-graduate employment
Our graduates serve in universities, ministries of education, philanthropic foundations and development agencies both overseas and in the United States. International graduates typically return to their countries of origin to work in administrative, policy, and research-related activities, though some assume functions in international organizations. American graduates who work in the United States become involved in educational and socially relevant research or development activities. American graduates with overseas experience or interests usually work with international agencies, philanthropic organizations, universities, or foreign governments in areas related to research and development. Our graduates are well-suited for positions that involve a blend of practice and theory, and require a combination of skills in an educational specialty and in one or more of the social sciences

Solid preparation

The SIDES program is specifically designed to help students conduct scholarly and critical inquiry into education and its relationship to the social, economic, cultural, political and historical context. Our curriculum provides a

  • basic grounding in the economic, social, cultural, and political dimensions of education and development,
  • in-depth training in one or more of the social science disciplines (anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, gender studies, communications, public administration, urban and regional planning, etc.), and
  • a professional specialization in one or more areas of educational practice (program evaluation, educational planning, policy analysis, adult education, higher education, administration, instructional design, etc.).
Students negotiate individual programs of study with their advisor and have numerous opportunities for hands-on research and field application.
