DR. JOHN A. SAMPLEMy commitment to human resource management and development began in 1972 when I was appointed the Training Director for the Florida Division of Youth Services. From that time forward, I have combined a career in higher education with HRM/D consulting in business, government, and associations. I have presented over 500 programs to more than 10,000 participants. Many of these programs were designed, developed, and implemented using an instructional systems approach to improving individual and team performance. My strength is in designing and facilitating customized programs in businesses for supervisors, managers, and executives on such topics as communication, leadership, selection, and performance improvement and appraisal systems. My employment experiences includes two years as a contract consultant to the nuclear power division of Florida Power and Light (instructional systems manager), the Center for Professional Development, FSU, (director of professional education and training), and the Center for Needs Assessment and Planning (strategic planning contract manager). One of my interests is writing and publishing about human resource management, training and development. I have authored over 50 journal articles and chapters in books and annuals. My most current publications explore the consequences of liability for negligent training and other legal topics impacting HRD You may have read some of my articles on training liability in Performance & Instruction, Training, the ASTD InfoLine, and the Annual for Developing Human Resources. My academic training include the Ph.D. in Adult Education (Florida State University), the MSM in Human Resource Management (St. Thomas University) and the BS in Criminology (FSU). I am proud of the fact that I had a significant impact on the development of the HRD certificate program at FSU, and was the first coordinator while in graduate school. I have earned the SPHR (Senior Professional Human Resources) designation from the Society for Human Resource Management, and I am a Registered Organizational Development Practitioner (RODP). I have taught graduate and undergraduate level courses in several colleges and universities, notably Florida International University (adult education/HRD), Florida State University (public administration and adult education), Nova Southeastern University (human resource development), Barry University (human resource management) and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (labor relations). I was the Director of the graduate program in Human Resources at St. Thomas University (Miami, FL) for eight years. Most recently, I was the Director of the Tallahassee site for the School of Adult and Continuing Education, Barry University. I am married to Brenda Hubbard and we have an adopted a Chinese baby girl, Amber Guangbing Sample - now five years old.
