Dr. Irvin teaches courses in curriculum, educational leadership, technology, and middle level education. She serves as Program Coordinator for Educational Leadership/Administration and is currently working to infuse technology into her teaching.

Dr. Irvin has been active in middle level education for many years. She taught social studies for eight years and then obtained her Ph. D. She served as Editor of Research in Middle Level Education for the National Middle School Association (1989-1994), as Chair of the Research Committee for six years (1990-1996), and as a member of the Adolescent Literacy Commission of the International Reading Association. Her main area of expertise is literacy learning for adolescents. She has authored numerous books on middle level education and literacy:

  • Reading and the High School Student: Strategies to Enhance Literacy with Klemp and Buehl. (2001). Allyn and Bacon.

  • Strategies for Teaching Self Discipline in the Middle Grades with Wolfgang and Bennett. (1999). Allyn and Bacon.

  • What Current Research Says to the Middle Level Practitioner, Editor (1998): National Middle School Association.

  • Reading and the Middle School Student: Strategies to Enhance Literacy (Second Edition), (1998) : Allyn and Bacon.

  • Enhancing Social Studies Instruction through Reading and Writing Strategies with Lunstrum, Lynch-Brown, & Shepard (1995): National Council for the Social Studies.

  • Starting Early with Study Skills: A Week-by-Week Guide for Elementary Students with Rose (1995): Allyn and Bacon.

  • Leadership in Middle Level Education: Volume II: Leadership in Successfully Restructuring Middle Level Schools with Keefe, Valentine, & Clark (1994): National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Dr. Irvin serves as a consultant and speaker to school systems and professional organizations throughout the nation. She has authored numerous articles and monographs on reading, middle level education, and leadership. She also authors the What Research Says to the Middle Level Practitioner Department for the Middle School Journal.
