Prospective Students
Thank you for considering graduate study in higher education at Florida
State University.
At the Masters level, our students benefit from a close relationship with
practicing professionals in the field through graduate assistantships,
internships, and other activities. In the classroom, we provide a
curriculum that is rigorous and emphasizes a theory to practice
perspective immediately transferable to the world of higher education
management and leadership. We offer a Masters in one of two areas of
emphasis: student affairs or general administration.
At the doctoral level, our students typically come to the program with a
background of work experiences in higher education. In the classroom,
doctoral students are able to draw on those past experiences in their
interaction with their classmates and faculty. Doctoral students are
expected to meet high performance standards and to demonstrate superior
skills in writing, research, and application of theory to practice. Many
of our doctoral students choose to enroll on a full-time basis and work
in a graduate assistantship while in school. Others may attend on a
part-time basis and retain their current employment status. Either way,
the faculty will work with you to design a valuable and meaningful
doctoral experience focused on either the Ed.D. or Ph.D. degree.
The Higher Education Program at Florida State University welcomes your
interest and invites you to visit us in person. We encourage you to
participate in our annual
Visiting Days,
scheduled for February 15, 16, and 17, 2009. Visiting Days are
designed for newly admitted students to meet faculty and students, tour
the campus, and interview for graduate assistantships available with a
range of agencies.
To participate in Visiting Days, all admissions documents (See Admissions
Procedure.) should be in the ELPS department by January 9, 2009.
However, while Visiting Days are the best opportunity to interview for an
assistantship, other arrangements for interviews can be made for
individuals who are admitted to the Higher Education Program after this
deadline.
At this time we are accepting applications for Fall 2009!
If you have questions, please feel free to contact us by e-mail, phone,
or in person.
Thank You,
Dr. Joe Beckham
