Graduate Assistantships
Florida State University requires graduate students to
be enrolled full-time to qualify for assistantships or
fellowships.
A limited number of graduate assistantships are offered by the department
each year. Duties are connected with instruction or research of mutual
benefit to the University and the student. Only students with regular
graduate student status, enrolled full-time, are eligible for graduate
assistantships. A full-time student must carry 12 credit hours, unless
he/she is working as a graduate assistant, in which case 9 hours is the
minimum. Graduate students (financing their education with loans) should
note that most lenders require students to carry a full credit load; at
FSU that is 12 credit hours. A student may take more than 12 hours a term
to expedite program completion.
The stipend of a graduate assistantship varies depending
on the amount of service rendered, the nature of service, and the
qualifications of the student. Tuition waivers are available; students
must pay student fees each term. The
application form is available on-line. Application for
graduate assistantships may be also obtained from the Department. (850)
644-6777. To remain eligible for an assistantship, a student must
discharge the assigned duties satisfactorily as determined by the director
of the program. No graduate student with less than a 3.0 cumulative grade
point average will be eligible to continue more than one term as a
graduate assistant.
College of Education Assistantships: work with
faculty members assisting with research and other activities as necessary.
Funding varies from year to year, but there are usually several positions
available. Recipients are chosen by the faculty as positions are
available. All prospective students indicating their intent to enroll in
the program will be considered.
The deadline for priority consideration for these
assistantships is February 15. Assistantships will be offered during the
first two weeks of April. A prospective student must be admitted to the
higher education program to be offered an assistantship. A very limited
number of assistantships will be available for the following year after
the end of April.
The Hardee Center was established in 1977 to serve as a catalyst for
the identification, professional growth, and advancement of women in
higher education. The Hardee Center coordinates a graduate scholars
program available to women and men. Candidates who are admitted to
graduate study in the higher education are eligible for the graduate
scholar positions. Please visit the Hardee Center
website for more information on available graduate scholar positions
and application details.
