Our Mission Statement

Planning is essential to the actualization of individuals within a modern society and to the formulation and implementation of effective public policies. Our vision is that the Department of Urban and Regional Planning will be:

  • a force for the improvement of welfare, equity and quality-of-life in human societies
  • a fountainhead of ideas and resources for improving understanding of the world, public and private decision making, and the practice of planning
  • a stimulating, supportive environment in which individual faculty, students, staff, and visitors grow and are productive
  • and a democratic, collaborative, and collegial community.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning stimulates and enables practicing planners, aspiring planners, decision makers, and interested publics to understand urban and regional systems, public decision making, institutions of planning, and activities of planners; develops and critically examines theories and methods useful to understanding urban and regional systems, public decision making, institutions of planning and activities of professional planners; and utilizes and applies these theories and methods to issues of importance to communities and professionals.

We recognize a particular responsibility to chronicle, examine, and reflect planning practice within the State of Florida for the purposes of improving planning practice both within Florida and elsewhere.
