Museums

The College of Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance is closely tied to the museum world through the FSU Museums—the Museum of Fine Arts on campus and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. All FSU museums provide fertile ground for research of original art. In addition, they offer opportunities to learn, firsthand, about all aspects of museum operations including management, collections care, curatorial and interpretive processes, museum education, public programs, catalogue publishing, public relations, and museum technology. To complement the rich museum resources, the College of Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance has originated Museum Studies at FSU, a certificate program designed to augment a graduate-level degree with theoretical and practical experience in various museum careers.

The Museum of Fine Arts

The FSU Museum of Fine Arts is the major art exhibition space for the university and an integral part of the Tallahassee community. Occupying the east wing of the Fine Arts Building, it is a 16,000 square foot facility with upper and lower level galleries and courtyard. Because of the many roles it plays, the museum presents a variety of superb exhibitions, is building a permanent collection, performs as a teaching and training venue, supports and excellent small press for catalogues and scholarly publications, and promote educational outreach. Offerings at the museum have included lush paintings by James Rosenquist, hyper-realistic sculptures by Duane Hanson, legendary Western vistas by Ansel Adams, and social statements by feminist Judy Chicago. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

In the summer 2000, the Ringling facilities in Sarasota, Florida were transferred by the legislature to FSU. Located on 67 acres, this large complex includes an art collection of world stature, John Ringling’s mansion, The Museum of the Circus, and the historic Asolo Theatre. The Ringling Museum offers extraordinary advantages to our students and faculty interested in the visual and performing arts, and museum studies. The College of Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance plans to collaborate in a myriad of ways as the FSU-Ringling association matures and funds for programs develop.
