During the week of March 13 to 18, 1996, I attended the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. The meetings were held at the Riviera Hotel on the famous Las Vegas Strip
Arriving early, I waited in a crowd of criminologists eager for the registration booth to open. I noticed an exhibit demonstrating a new form of jail architecture. Some of the participants were veteran law enforcement agents. I found the book exhibits and talked to the publishers. Some had funny promotions.
Food was plentiful and cheap. I spent a lot of time at Starbuck's Coffee House, taking some time to enjoy their cappucino and admire their mug collection. I took some time to walk the strip and admire the casinos' neon signs. I was given "Las Vegas in a Bag" by a young man on the street, but I can't show you what was in it.
I stayed out of the Riviera's casino for several days, but after winning $65 in less than an hour on a loose slot, I managed to lose a lot of it. I did win a souvenir deck of cards with nice pictures on the back.
I gave a Seminar on "Using the Internet for Criminal Justice Education and Research," pinch hit for William Tafoya and did a workshop on the same topic, and presented a paper on my current research project, a longitudinal cohort study of Florida delinquents. Twice the registered number attended the seminar, and some never paid. See above photo.
On Saturday, I flew in an eight seater plane over the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. While some of the resulting photos are quite spectacular, the ride was so bumpy that getting good pictures was quite difficult. The ride inspired me to come back again and hike through the canyon. I have not yet had my life altering moment as promised in the movie Grand Canyon
