TEACHING:

Assigned responsibilities for teaching reflect the demands of different faculty appointments at Syracuse University, the University of Oregon, and The Florida State University. At Syracuse University I was primarily involved in preservice teaching and personnel preparation of master's degree students in Rehabilitation Counseling. At the University of Oregon my teaching was most heavily concentrated in the continuing education of community-based habilitation/rehabilitation professionals who worked to increase independence for persons with mental retardation. At Florida State University my teaching responsibilities are concentrated in preservice education of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students

in the areas of rehabilitation, mental health, counseling psychology, and school-to-community transitions. Very consistently my teaching has been highly evaluated by students in university preservice education and by participants in continuing education programs. The following summary of university teaching covers contributions in four areas: (1) course instruction; (2) advisement/ supervision; (3) teaching administration; and (4) continuing education/short-term training.

COURSE INSTRUCTION:

Taught 20 didactic graduate level courses or seminars at Syracuse University and/or the University of Oregon and/or Florida State University. Originated nine of these courses. They include:

ADVISEMENT/SUPERVISION:

Another aspect of university teaching has been consultation and direction of graduate students through committee or individual advisement or supervision. Comulatively, advisement/super-vision has involved serving on over 50 doctoral program committees, over 25 dissertation committees, direction of six dissertations, and direction of 17 master's degree research projects. In addition, I have provided individual supervision, usually meeting weekly, to over 100 graduate students on their research, teaching, or counseling.

Since joining Florida State University in 1988, I have joined 30 doctoral program committees, served as the major professor for seven doctoral students, and done individual supervision with approximately 40 graduate students. I have also served as the faculty advisor to the graduate student organization committee within the Psychological Services in Education Program. Ongoing, I provide academic advisement and career guidance to undergraduate students in rehabilitation. This includes doing graduation checks, exit interviews, and consulting/supervising with the undergraduate advisor to the Rehabilitation Services Program.

TEACHING ADMINISTRATION:

Since 1968, a substantial portion of my assignment of responsibilities has involved the activity of teaching administration. As the designated faculty representative for a specific program area, I have had ongoing duties involving conceptualization/planning, staffing, direction, consultation, evaluation, and representation. In each of the five teaching administration roles I have held, at three universities, my contributions appear to have substantially improved the departmental program and led to improved learning opportunities for students. The time frames and titles of the five teaching/administration positions I have held are:

1994 - Coordinator, Rehabilitation Services Undergraduate Program, Department of Human

Services and Studies, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL.

1989 - Director, School-to-Community Transitions Doctoral Specialization, Department of

Human Services and Studies, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL.

1985- Director, School-to-Community Transitions Doctoral Program, Division of Special

1988 Education and Rehabilitation, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR.

1981- Training Director, Rehabilitation Research and Training Center in Mental Retardation,

1988 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR.

1968- Coordinator of Clinical Training, Rehabilitation Counselor Education Program, Division

1975 of Special Education and Rehabilitation, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.

CONTINUING EDUCATION/SHORT-TERM TRAINING:

Since 1976, an extensive amount of teaching has been conducted in short-term training programs of one to five days' duration. Cumulatively over 200 presentations have been made to approximately 5,000 persons. Trainees predominantly have been experienced professionals who provide habilitation/rehabilitation services to people with disabilities.

I have personally coordinated and moderated over 50 continuing education programs. Many of these training programs involved marketing efforts and charged a registration fee to cover nonpersonnel expenses. Most presentations and short-term training programs have been evaluated. Outcomes indicate that presentations have consistently had significant impact on training participants. The titles of the 30 different instructional units that have been presented in continuing education programs are:

-- Building Friendships and Strengthening Social Support Networks

-- Community Transitions

-- Coping with Disability Related Stress

-- Coping with Significant Change and Loss

-- Counseling Exceptional Young Adults and Parents

-- Crisis Intervention

-- Decision Making: Theory and Practice

-- Evaluating Inservice Training

-- Evaluating Staff Performance

-- Evaluating Supervisory Performance

-- Facilitating Interpersonal Communications

SCHOLARSHIP:

Scholarly or creative activities closely reflect, and often have emerged from, clinical and teaching interests. However, a wide variety of applied research projects and presentations have been concentrated in one of five content areas: (1) psychological-social aspects of adjustment; (2) supervisory management; (3) leadership development; (4) family involvement in habilitation/ rehabilitation; and (5) service delivery practices in the fields of counseling and rehabilitation. Products and presentations tend to be practical and aimed at target audiences of university educators and community-based professionals or consumer advocates in human services.

A central theme in my scholarly activities has been coping with disablement and overcoming handicapping barriers. My products and presentations reflect these themes in five focused areas:

(1) psychological-social aspects of adjustment

(2) supervisory management in human services

(3) leadership development in human services

(4) family involvement and family intervention

(5) service delivery practices in counseling and rehabilitation

The type of scholarship I have produced has varied according to my responsibilities at three universities. At the University of Oregon my duties especially related to creating practical products for community-based professionals who worked to enhance independence for adults with mental retardation. Consequently my vita for my Oregon years especially includes audiovisual instructional curriculum materials and grant-related products.

Cumulatively my overall scholarship reflects approximately 200 contributions in nine categories. This includes: ten editorial assignments; writing all or major portions of ten grants/contracts, and 30 grant continuation reports or continuation applications; authoring 63 discrete products in five categories (six books/monographs, 17 journal articles, ten book chapters, 11 instructional curricula, and 27 other works); and making over 200 presentations at conferences or professional meetings. My largest research undertaking, a nationwide state-of-the-art study of rehabilitation supervision, was awarded the ARCA Research Award by the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, which is the most prestigious award honoring research in the field of rehabilitation.

A chronology of scholarship follows. Included are nine categories of activity: (1) editorial responsibilities; (2) grants; (3) dissertation; (4) books/monographs; (5) journal articles; (6) book chapters; (7) instructional curriculum packages; (8) other works; and (9) presentations at conferences or professional meetings.

INSTRUCTIONAL CURRICULUM MATERIALS:

Teaching/training can be much more interesting and effective if educators make use of instruc-

tional resources developed by others. Related to this, I have collaborated with colleagues to

produce 11 instructional resources, which can be used by other educators as well as myself. Many

of these collaborations have involved graphic artists and have resulted in audiovisual products.

One major ongoing programmatic effort has involved producing a series of three resource modules

on parenting experiences with persons with developmental disabilities at major transition points

along a family life cycle.
