SPS 5945 Practicum in School Psychology

(3 Credits)

To provide supervised field experience in school psychology with the objectives of developing skills and provide experiences in:

• Integration of theoretical aspects of the program required coursework with practical

• Comprehensive psychoeducational assessments and report writing.
• Integration of assessment information for developing appropriate recommendations for direct, indirect, and home/school interventions.
• Exposure to a wide range of children and problems.
• Direct and indirect interventions where appropriate.
• Development of interpersonal skills relevant to professional practice.

The FSU Multidisciplinary Center provides assessment, consultative, and intervention services to children, adolescents, and adults who present a wide range of learning and developmental problems. The focus for the school psychology practicum students will be with children and adolescents and for school-related problems. The Center also provides direct services to local public schools, including Florida High.

• On-site field experience at the Center and assigned schools.
• Direct clinical supervision with Center staff.
• Limited report writing.
• Attendance at the required practicum seminar (described below) and specified inservice sessions, meetings, and staffings at the Center.

• Reviews of existing records and educational/social history.
• Multicultural considerations where appropriate.
• Broad ranges of intervention options, with a focus on in-school interventions.
• Integration of theoretical considerations into practical application.
• Ethical considerations.

The practicum is graded S/U and will be determined based input from the clinical supervisors and the instructor. At the conclusion of the 2nd semester, all students will be evaluated generally on an "internship readiness" dimension. Attendance is expected at the practicum seminar and at Center designated functions. Students will submit a log of their experiences for each semester to document their hours and experiences--see attached Practicum Log form. All students will also be evaluated each semester by their supervisor on the Practicum Student Rating Form, also attached.
