The conference is planned as a two-day seminar on ancient Athenian
Democracy;the
following papers will be delivered:

Jennifer Roberts (City University of New York): "Athenian Citizenship
in a Cross-Cultural Context."

Loren J. Samons (Boston University): "The Place of Democracy in
Athenian History."

Robert Wallace (Northwestern University): "Listening to the archai
in Democratic Athens."

Raphael Sealey (University of California, Berkeley): "Athens and
the Rule of Law."

Mogens Hansen (University of Copenhagen): "Was the Polis a State
or a Stateless Society?"

Josiah Ober (Princeton University): "Democracy, Knowledge, and Military
Performance in Fifth-Century Athens."

P.J. Rhodes (Durham/Florida State University): "Nothing to Do with
Democracy: Drama and the Polis."
There is no registration fee, but individuals intending to attend one or
all sessions are asked to complete a registration form to assist us with
planning. Attendees are also invited to an excursion to Wakulla Springs
State Park on Saturday afternoon (approximate cost: $10), to attend the
conference banquet at the Goodwood Plantation in downtown Tallahassee on
Saturday evening ($25; students $15), and to join (at their own expense)
the speakers and other participants for additional meals at local
restaurants.
