| The Classics Department is pleased to announce the creation of the Rankin Fellowships for Travel to Italy, under generous donations made by the family and friends of Dr. Kathleeen Rankin, who taught in the Department of Classics at Florida State University from 1967 until her death in 1976. Dr. Rankin loved the FSU Study Abroad Program in Florence, and this fellowship encourages students to travel to Italy. It carries the stipulation that the funds are to be used by an undergraduate student who is participating in an archaeological excavation sponsored by the Department of Classics, in particular those conducted by Archaeology Programs in Italy, directed by Nancy T. de Grummond. |

| The travel stipends will be up to $500. Undergraduate students who have been
accepted for one of the departmental excavations at Cetamura or San Venanzo are
invited to submit their names for consideration. The recipients will be announced on March 31, 2006. A list of previous recipients is available here. |

Dr. Kathleen Rankin |
| |
| Dr. Kathleen Rankin was born in London, England, on May 31, 1910. She concentrated her studies in Law and Classics at Oxford University, where she earned her B.A. in 1933 and her M.A. in 1936. She also received an LL.B. degree from London University, and practiced law in England for several years. A naturalized U.S. citizen from 1952, Dr. Rankin taught high school Latin in North Carolina, and earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As an Assistant Professor of Classics at Florida State University from 1967 until her death in 1976, Dr. Rankin enriched her department with her great command of the Greek and Latin languages and with her boundless capacity for serving. She took a special interest in the teaching of undergraduates. |
