Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect?
The CARE Summer Bridge Program is designed to serve as a transition for incoming college students to Florida State University. During your seven-week stay at Florida State University you will have several obligations. You will take up to seven credit hours of coursework. You will be required to complete 7 hours of study hall and a counselor evaluation each week. You will also be required to reside in a residence hall.

What staff will be involved with the program?
The Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE) has a full competent staff to assist you. The CARE coordinator and counselors serve as resources for concerns regarding academics or CARE sponsored activities throughout the day and evening. The Resident Assistant (RA) on your floor will be your housing resource and your point of contact if you cannot reach a CARE staff member. The Hall Manager can assist you with maintenance concerns and the Hall Coordinator can assist you with any other concerns you might have.

When, where, how do I pay for summer costs?
Students who do not have financial aid have to pay tuition & fees by July 10, 2009, and housing by July 3, 2009. You can pay these dues on your financial aid student toolkit. Students who do not qualify for financial aid can opt not to have a meal plan. Where will I stay for the summer?
Students will reside in a residence hall. Students will be expected to use designated entrances into Landis Hall. Doors are locked 24 hours a day and can only be opened using your FSU ID Card that you students receive upon arrival.

What's in each room?
Students may share rooms with up to 3 participants. Each room is furnished with a bed for each person, study desks, chairs, a chest of drawers, a mirror, and a small refrigerator.

How can family and friends contact me?
Each student has been assigned a Ubox. This Ubox number is provided on the Housing invoice. This serves as a mailbox for all SBP participants. On the housing invoice is also the phone number of each participant’s room in the residence hall. If you have lost the housing invoice, then your contact information can be provided to you during check-in on June 20, 2008.

In case of an emergency, calls can be made to the following numbers: CARE office at (850) 644-9699; or to the University Housing Office at (850) 644-2860 (only during business hours Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm). The University Police can be call after hours at (850) 644-1234.

How much does it cost to attend the CARE Summer Bridge Program?
The costs for tuition, room, meals and books (for the summer term only) will be covered based upon need, with a combination of financial aid and university support. Students who meet program requirements, but do not qualify for free financial aid (not loans), may participate at their own expense. When does the program start?
The CARE Summer Bridge Program will begin on June 20tt 2009. Students are expected to check in the residence hall between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

If I am paying for the CARE Summer Bridge Program myself, do I have to get the meal plan?
No, you are not mandated to have a meal plan if you are self-paid.

How do I find out who my roommate will be for the CARE Summer Bridge Program?
Prior to the start of the CARE Summer Bridge Program, the FSU Housing Department will notify all students as to who their roommates will be, what room they will be residing in, their mailing address, and their phone number.

Do I take any classes during the CARE Summer Bridge Program? If I do, do the classes count towards graduation?
All CARE Summer Bridge Program Participants take up to 9 credit hours that count towards their graduation. (Classes are based on SAT/ACT scores and Placement Exams).

Do I have to stay on campus on all four years that I attend FSU?
All CARE Summer Bridge Program Participants are required to reside in the residential hall for the first summer term only. If participants would like to reside in the residential hall for the following semesters, they are urged to complete and return their Fall Housing Agreement as soon as possible.

Once I attend the CARE Summer Bridge Program, am I automatically an FSU student?
Once you have been accepted to the CARE Summer Bridge Program, you have been accepted to Florida State University.

Is Health Insurance Mandatory?
Yes. You must have Health Insurance before you are allowed to register for classes. Please visit www.tshc.fsu.edu to inquire about satisfying this requirement.
