The program in Asian Studies offers an area studies format that is designed to develop a student's competence in the language, history, culture, and the contemporary political and economic setting of a particular country or cultural region. The program focuses on Asia, broadly defined as including East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. The curriculum combines area or country specific courses with general, comparative coursework offering students both a broad overview as well the requisite cultural immersion. The degree's area-intensive emphasis provides the concepts and theories that allow students to enhance their comprehension of Asia within a specific concentration. The program's interdisciplinary aspect promotes a sound understanding of Asia' past and present while enabling students to develop the skills necessary to evaluate the evolving role of Asia within a global context. Students are to select linguistic and thematic specializations in line with their intellectual and career goals and to design their programs accordingly.
