What is Asian Studies?

The Program in Asian Studies is an area studies program that is designed to develop a student's competence in the language, history, culture, and the contemporary political and economical settings of a particular country or cultural region. The program is focused on Asia, broadly defined as including East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. The program combines area or country-specific courses that give students the needed cultural immersion with more general comparative course work. This is intended to provide students with the requisite intellectual tools, concepts and theories to understand their particular disciplinary concentrations as well as be able to pull from various disciplines the skills to evaluate not only Asia's past, present, and future but the role of Asia within the context of the world. Students are to select language and thematic specializations in line with their intellectual interests and career goals and design their program of studies accordingly.

How can this be a career move?

The 21st century has often been called the "Pacific Age," that is, Asian countries have received more and more attention as either established or rising powers in world economics and politics. Job markets throughout Asia often offer travel and work opportunities of a lifetime. Students who have graduated from FSU's Asian Studies program have gone on to teach English in Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan and Hunan Province in China. Alumni have also entered fields such as journalism, business, education, the military, and government. As American business continues to expand into Asia, many multinational corporations seek individuals with background knowledge of Asian cultures and languages. Having these qualifications can be an invaluable career move.

Fullfilling and Understanding thqe Requirements

Asian Studies Major:
The total hour requirements for a major are a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours in an approved area language plus an additional thirty-six (36) semester hours beyond the liberal studies requirements (with a grade of "C-" or better in each course.) Students majoring in the program are to construct their studies around four components:

1. language requirement. A minimum of twelve (12) semester hours of course work in a relevant area language (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Sanskrit, or some other approved Asian language). To encourage the achievement of language proficiency, language course-work hours taken beyond the twelve (12) semester hour minimum will be counted towards the degree requirements

2. history requirement. A minimum of six (6) semester hours in Asia history courses.

3. major and minor track requirements. Students are to select either the social science track or the arts and humanities track as the major focus of their course work. Students are to take a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours of course work among those area-specific courses listed for their major track and a minimum of six (6) semester hours of course work from among those courses listed for their minor track.

4. concepts and theories tool requirement. For each of the two tracks a larger number of concepts and theories courses are selected from the relevant disciplines. Students are to take six (6) semester hours of course work from among those courses listed for their major track. Students are encouraged to select from among history and area specific courses to complete the major, although additional concepts and theories may be used to meet required prerequisites.

Asian Studies Minor:
Students minoring in the program must complete eighteen (18) semester hours of Asian Studies course work beyond the liberal studies requirement. In this case, none of the broader comparative concepts and theories will count toward the eighteen (18) semester-hour minimum. Students may select freely from all area specific courses so long as at least three (3) semester hours are taken in history and each of the two tracks.
