Imani Winds

If classical wind-ensemble concerts are supposed to be staid affairs, no one bothered to tell the Imani Winds. The Grammy-nominated quintet has enriched the traditional wind quintet repertoire with European, African, Latin American and American musical traditions.

The adventurous but accessible ensemble has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world for their dynamic playing, innovative programming and inspirational outreach programs, which they have brought to many communities throughout the country. The group has performed world-premiere pieces by prominent composers and collaborated with jazz artists Wayne Shorter and Pacquito d’Rivera.

“For these players, jazz, Latin music and various flavors of traditional world music deserve to rub elbows with standard concert fare...the group and its unusual repertory approach have excited the chamber music world” (New York Times).
