Statement

Cartography

I was born in Yugoslavia. I lived in the town of Novi Sad, Northern Serbia until I was seventeen. Yugoslavia was a communist Eastern European country with strong awareness of Western pop culture. I grew up watching John Wayne and Johnny Weissmuller* on Sunday morning TV. I am a product of combined cultures. In 1994 I moved to Southern Louisiana out of political necessity. I use my Western education and Eastern European heritage to juxtapose the two seemingly opposite cultures and compare sociological, political, and environmental aspects of the modern migrations. This body of work started initially as a form of travelogue, and evolved into search for patterns, trends, and simulacra in order to create a kind of an anchor for the generation adjusting to globalization.
