Bachelor of Arts Program Course Distribution

The Bachelor of Arts Program in Art History requires a total of 42 credit hours earned in art history and creative art courses.

ART HISTORY TOTAL: 33 HOURS

Foundation Courses (Required)

6 credit hours (2 courses) - To be taken as early as possible in the student’s development.

 

ARH 3056 History and Criticism of Art I

Introduction to Prehistoric through Medieval Art (3 credit hours)

ARH 3057 History and Criticism of Art II

Introduction to Renaissance through Modern Art (3 credit hours)

Advanced Courses

A minimum of 27 credit hours (9 courses) beyond the foundation courses.

 

8 upper level art history courses (total of 24 credit hours)

Art History courses at the 4000 level. At least two of these courses must be in World Arts. All ancient art courses at the 3000-level and above are considered advanced. Students not minoring in Museum Studies may apply one internship (ARH 4941) toward the upper-level course requirement.

AND

ARH 3800 Art History Seminar (3 credit hours)

Eighteen credit hours in art history must be completed prior to enrolling in the seminar.

OR

ARH 4810 Art History Methods and Media (3 credit hours)

is recommended for students planning to continue at the graduate level. Enrollment by permission of instructor only.

Only a grade of “C” or better is acceptable for courses in Art History to be credited toward the major.

Studio Art

Nine credit hours (3 courses) in Studio Art.  The following three-credit courses have no prerequisites, however any three offered by the Department of Art will suffice:


ART 1201C - Basic Two-Dimensional Design
ART 1300C - Drawing I (for non-art majors)
ART 2003C - Survey of Studio Art Practices
ART 2203 - Three-Dimensional Foundations
ART 2752Cr - Wheel Throwing

A grade of “D” is acceptable for studio art courses.  Students also majoring in Textiles, Interior Design, or Apparel Design and Technology may substitute courses from other departments with permission of the Undergraduate Advisor.

University Requirements

In addition to the major requirements, students must satisfy the following university requirements for the BA degree.

  • Complete a foreign language at the 2000 level.
  • Earn a grade of C- or higher in an oral communication course, i.e., SPC 1016 or SPC 2600, or receive a grade of B or higher in a high school oral communication class.
  • Earn a grade of C- or higher in ARH 2814, Information Technology for Art Historians. This course is required of all art history majors who have not already satisifed the university's computer literacy requirement.
