Departmental Grants, Fellowships, Assistantships

The Art History Department offers a number of generous fellowships and grants. Scroll down for a detailed list of departmental opportunities.

Patricia Rose Doctoral Teaching Fellowship

Stipends totaling $14,000 for each of two years, plus generous tuition waivers, are awarded to the most highly qualified doctoral applicants. Each Rose Fellow has the responsibility for teaching one full section of the art history introductory surveys.

Master's Awards

Students at the Master's level may be eligible for a Master's Award of $5000 per year plus full tuition waivers. Recipients are chosen on the basis of past record and future potential as professional art historians. Each recipient devotes ten hours per week to the department, either assisting a professor or working in the Art History Resource Center, the department office, or the Museum of Fine Arts.

Penelope E. Mason Bequest

The Penelope E. Mason bequest, made by a former professor in the Art History Department, provides funding to graduate students under six programs. All Mason applications should include the Mason Award Cover Sheet.

The Mason Award categories are:

  • Conference Travel Grants - This grant provides up to $500 to cover the cost of conference registration, travel and lodging for students giving papers at scholarly conferences. The application should name the conference, provide the title of the paper to be presented, and detail expected costs and should be accompanied by evidence that the paper has been accepted (e.g., an acceptance letter or a copy of the program). Students may receive this grant annually. Applications are accepted throughout the academic year.
  • Conference and Research Travel Grants - Up to $500 to cover cost of travel and related expenses to attend a conference or conduct research related to an Art History course. The application should state how the travel will enrich the student's contribution to the course or its required research paper and should identify the faculty sponsor. The award may be held once. Applications are accepted throughout the academic year.
  • Thesis Research and Travel Awards - Up to $3,000 to cover the cost of travel and living expenses while conducting research for the M.A. thesis. The application should describe the thesis project, identify the faculty sponsor, explain the need to travel, and provide a budget of expenses. The award may be held once. Deadlines: October 13 , 2008 and March 30, 2009.
  • Pre-Dissertation Research and Travel Award - Up to $3,000 to cover the cost of travel and living expenses while conducting research on a project likely to lead to a doctoral dissertation. The application should describe the research topic, identify the faculty sponsor, explain the need to travel, and provide a budget of expenses. The award may be held twice. Deadlines: October 13 , 2008 and March 30, 2009.
  • Dissertation Research and Travel Awards - Up to $5,000 to cover the cost of travel and living expenses while conducting research for the dcotoral dissertation. Available to doctoral students whose dissertation prospectus has been approved. The application should describe progress on the dissertation, explain the need to travel, and provide a budget of expenses. The award may be held once. Application deadline: Deadlines: October 13 , 2008 and March 30, 2009.
  • Dissertation Writing Fellowships - Up to $5,000 per semester for one or two semesters to support full-time writing of the doctoral dissertation at an advanced stage. The application should describe progresson the dissertation, outline those sections to be written during the tenure of the fellowship, and explain the need for financial support. The fellowship may be held for a maximum of two semesters. Deadlines: October 13 , 2008 and March 30, 2009.

University Fellowship

The University Fellowship is awarded each year to a small number of graduate students at any level, incoming or ongoing, with outstanding scholastic records. Applicants are nominated by the Art History Department and must have a minimum GRE score (combined quantitative and verbal) of 1300, or an undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The award carries a stipend of $10,000 for a fellowship period of two semesters. This Fellowship does not require service to the University.

College of Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance Fellowship

One fellowship each year is awarded to an incoming graduate student in the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance. The Art History Department nominates a student with superior GPA, GRE scores, and recommendations. The candidate then competes with nominees from the other five departments in the School. This Fellowship does not require service to the University. However, it requires that fellows take 12 credit hours per semester.

FSU Office of Graduate Studies Dissertation Research Grant

Dissertation Fellowships of $10,000 are awarded on a university-wide competitive basis for the final year of dissertation writing. Grants-in-aid of $500 are also available.
