Graduate Studies

Programs

The Department of Art History offers programs leading to the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy in the history and criticism of art. The objective is to prepare the student for a professional career either in academic art history or in one of the related professions, including museums, commercial galleries, and publishing. Four program tracks are offered to provide the greatest flexibility in serving the students' career goals: two tracks for the M.A., one for the Ph.D, and an accelerated track that combines the requirements of the M.A. and Ph.D. For detailed program information, see the Graduate Handbook.

Students are guided through the program by the departmental Graduate Advisor and an individual advisor chosen during the first year by the student from her/his field of study. Admission to the program is made only in the fall semester. The annual deadline for receipt of completed applications is the second Friday in January.

Fields of Study

Museum Studies Program

The Art History department also offers courses that fulfill requirements of the interdisciplinary Museum Studies certificate program, a supplementary program available to any FSU graduate student interested in a museum career. For more information, please visit our Museum Studies page.
