Students applying for the program should have an undergraduate major
in one of the American Studies areas, such as English, History, Fine

of three letters of recommendation, a written personal statement, and

design a plan of study. The Master of Arts in American & Florida

on a non-thesis basis with the Director's approval. A student writing
a thesis must complete 30 credit hours, including a seminar in American
culture (AMS 5809) or one in American thought (AMS 5815), 6 hours of
thesis, and 24 hours of additional graduate course work. A student not
writing a thesis must complete 32 hours of graduate course work and
successfully pass a written and oral comprehensive examination. In addition,
all students must complete the College of Arts and Sciences foreign
language requirement. Potential applicants to the American Studies MA program should apply through the Humanities Department. Please indicate on your application the desire to focus in American Studies. Application Process
