Undergraduate Information
The Undergraduate Major
The undergraduate major requires 30 semester hours, not including courses
used to satisfy Liberal Studies requirements. Students must take at
least 9 semester hours in American Studies courses (including AMS 3310
"Changing Concepts of the American Character" and AMS 3810 "The Life
of the Mind in America," and a special topics course), and at least
3 hours each in literature, history, fine arts, and social sciences.
No more than 12 hours in one of these areas can count toward the major.
The remaining hours are distributed according to the plan of study developed
by the student and the Program Director. The American & Florida
Studies Office provides a list of courses from a number of departments
approved for the major.
The Minor
The minor in American & Florida Studies offers an
excellent complement to a major in humanities, the social sciences,
and the fine arts. The minor requires AMS 3310 "Changing Concepts of
the American Character" and AMS 3810 "The Life of the Mind in America,"
plus 6 hours of work approved by the Director in history, literature,
fine arts, or social sciences.
Internships
Internships are available for both undergraduate and graduate
students, broadening classroom study with appropriate field experience.

Additional Details for the Undergraduate Major
1. Candidates should successfully complete Liberal Arts and Gordon Rule requirements before entering the American Studies major. These requirements include, but are not limited to, six (6) hours of mathematics, six (6) hours of English composition, six (6) hours of history and social science (a minimum of 3 hours of history and 3 hours of social science), five (5) hours of humanities and fine arts (one course must meet the literature requirement), seven (7) hours of natural sciences (including a laboratory course), and at least one (1) multicultural course. No course used to satisfy these requirements may be applied to the American & Florida Studies major.
2. Candidates must also fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences foreign language requirement for a Bachelor of Arts. This is achieved by successfully completing the final course (2200 or 2300 level) of a twelve (12) semester hour sequence in a modern or ancient foreign language or its equivalent. Any or all of the above courses may be taken on an S/U basis if the student meets the university's guidelines for S/U course work.
3. A degree in American & Florida Studies requires completion of an approved minor area of study. Specific requirements regarding a minor depend upon the area chosen. Students are encouraged to contact the department in which the minor is located to determine requirements. A second major may be substituted for a minor.
4. The American & Florida Studies major requires the completion
of at least thirty (30) hours as described above. All courses must be
at the 3000- or 4000- level, with AML 2011 American Authors to 1875,
GEA 2210 Geography of the United States and Canada, and REL 2121 Religion
in America being exceptions.
